Viúva Gomes · DOC Colares tinto 50cl 2019
Viúva Gomes Red 2019 Colares
Viúva Gomes Red 2019 is one of the great classics of Colares DOC, one of Portugal's rarest regions. It comes from ungrafted vines planted in sandy soils near the Atlantic, naturally protected from phylloxera. The historic Colares winery maintains its focus on indigenous grape varieties and wines that “taste of the place.”
2019 Harvest
A very good year in Colares: hot, but without the excesses of 2015/2017, resulting in a red wine with an elegant profile, moderate alcohol (~11.5%), and lively acidity. Bottled in small quantities, with great aging potential.
Vinification
Fermentation in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, using traditional methods (including gentle treading/extraction) and partial destemming (50%). Long aging of about 4 years in French oak barrels and chestnut and mahogany casks (with part of the batch also kept in stainless steel), seeking complexity without masking the Atlantic character.
Tasting Notes
Bright brick red color, medium concentration. Very fragrant nose, full of nuance: cherry, subtle black fruit, herbs, forest notes and a well-integrated touch of exotic woods. Light but serious on the palate, high acidity and tannins with a dry texture, long and fresh finish, with a mineral sensation and maritime salinity.
Grape Varieties
100% Ramisco (Colares).

The 2019 Colares Tinto was produced with Ramisco grapes from ungrafted vines grown on sandy soils mostly close to the sea, from different plots, from centenary to very young. The whole clusters were foot trodden and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, and the wine matured in a mixture of French barriques, 500-liter chestnut and mahogany (!) barrels and stainless steel. It has a characterful and nuanced nose, very perfumed and attractive, herbal, characterful, with notes of exotic woods (you bet!). It's surprisingly elegant and approachable. It has contained ripeness and alcohol, 11.5%, with a pH of 3.65 and 5.7 grams of acidity. 2019 was a very good year, warm but not as warm as 2015 or 2017. The wine is superb. 1,600 half-liter bottles were filled in March 2025.
We tasted a bottle of the 1969 that was incredibly young, with rustic notes of wild berries and an earthy touch, hints of eucalyptus and salty, with iron and tannin.
