Quinta da Pellada Carrocel 2021

Quinta da Pellada Carrocel 2021 is a unique red wine from Dão, created by Álvaro Castro and his daughter Maria, designed to showcase Touriga Nacional in a finer, more mineral and elegant style, faithful to the region's granite soils. The grapes come from a very specific plot – an old vineyard (c. 75 years old), planted at an altitude of ~500 m, with an old Touriga clone and trained using the Guyot method.

2021 Harvest

A year of balance and finesse: the wine is surprisingly young and precise, with pure fruit, floral aromas, and a luminous energy. 13.4% ABV and excellent aging potential (2025–2037).

Vinification

Manual harvest. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and gentle extraction (after cold maceration), favoring a silky texture and round tannins. Prolonged aging in used French oak (large volume barrels, 400–500 L; about 18–24 months), to integrate without leaving a mark.

Tasting notes

Aromatic and crystalline: blueberry, plum and cherry, violets and lavender, dried herbs, graphite and a touch of black olive. Medium-full, juicy and polished on the palate, with very fine tannins, harmonious structure and a long finish, with nuances of ripe fruit and forest floor. Serve at 16–18 °C; perfect with lamb, veal, mushroom dishes, or game birds.

Grape varieties

100% Touriga Nacional (Dão DOC).

The 2021 Carrocel feels insultingly young, peachy, perfumed, nuanced and elegant, with a velvety texture and super elegant and round tannins. Believe it or not, it's pure Touriga Nacional that was pruned in the Guyot method, with the grapes from a plot planted with the old clone in the Quinta da Pellada vineyard. It was hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in three- and four-year-old French oak barrels. It has a lot more complexity and depth than the variety usually shows when vinified as a varietal wine, and it's showy and perfumed but keeps the poise, elegance and balance. It has good ripeness and 13.4% alcohol in a year that delivered very balanced wines. It was bottled in November 2024.

Exceptionally aromatic and pure, with vibrant aromas of blueberries, violets, lavender and a touch of dark olives. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, featuring polished tannins, a harmonious structure, subdued density and a particular brightness. This wine is made from touriga nacional sourced from a 75-year-old vineyard planted at 500 meters above sea level. It was aged for two years in used 400-liter French oak barrels. Exceptional. Enjoy now or cellar for further aging.
