Weingut Keller Dalsheimer Hubacker Riesling Auslese 2017

Weingut Keller Dalsheimer Hubacker Riesling Auslese 2017 is one of Klaus-Peter Keller's cult sweet wines, a producer who has put Rheinhessen at the top of the world Riesling map. It comes from the Dalsheimer Hubacker vineyard, a family monopoly since 1789, a slope of marl and yellow limestone soils, known for its intense minerality and enormous ageing potential. 2017 saw frosts and very low yields, but the grapes that survived reached exemplary ripeness: high concentration, vibrant acidity and extremely pure aromas, perfect for a long-aging Riesling Auslese.

Vinification: Late harvest by hand, with berry-by-berry selection of very ripe bunches, some of them with noble Botrytis. This is followed by gentle pressing and slow fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, where the wine remains to age, maintaining low alcohol content and natural residual sugar in perfect balance with the acidity.

Tasting notes: Bright golden colour. The aroma is intense and seductive, with ripe orchard fruit, apricot, honey, candied citrus, tropical notes and a clear hint of wet stone, typical of Hubacker's limestone soils. On the palate, it is unctuous and sweet, but never heavy: the acidity is firm, the texture creamy and the finish long, elegant and salty, leaving echoes of fruit, honey and minerality in the mouth. Perfect for fine desserts, foie gras or simply to be enjoyed on its own.

Incredibly exotic fruit, orange, apricot, passionfruit. Super-sweet but still balanced. Just essence of sweet Riesling at the moment. Too extreme to drink now. I’ve run out of words to describe intensity.

The richest and boldest of Keller's 2017 GGs, but it also has great structure and a powerful, mineral and herbal finish. Although it is already showing plenty of citrus character, a lot more will come out if you're patient. Drink in 2019.
