Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018

Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018 is one of Burgundy's iconic whites. It comes from the famous Corton hillside in Aloxe-Corton, where the Latour family decided, after phylloxera, to uproot Aligoté and Pinot Noir and replant exclusively with Chardonnay, creating one of France's great whites. Today, the house owns 10.5 hectares, making it the largest owner in the appellation. The 2018 harvest, hot and sunny, produced extremely ripe grapes, with an average age of 30 years, planted in stony limestone soils and exposed to the south-east, harvested as late as possible to ensure concentration and a ageing potential of 10-15 years.

Vinification: The harvest is manual, with careful selection in the vineyard. Fermentation is traditional in French oak barrels, with complete malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 8–10 months in 100% new barrels, produced in Louis Latour's own cooperage, with medium toasting, giving a creamy structure without masking the minerality of the terroir.

Tasting notes: Powerful and complex. The nose reveals white stone fruits (peach), fresh hazelnut, vanilla, almond paste and slightly toasted nuances. On the palate, it is full and enveloping, with notes of vanilla, fresh almond and linden blossom, supported by firm acidity and a very fine saline touch on the long and persistent finish.

Grape varieties: 100% Chardonnay

Fresh and fruity, with aromas and flavors of lemon, pear, white flowers and stone, showing great tension and an underlying mineral component that gives this energy and length. The lemon theme continues on the lingering aftertaste, along with butter and pastry accents. Best from 2022 through 2029. 2,702 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.

Cask sample. Rich, ripe and inviting on the nose. The lees and the oak have given definite spice and an attractive savoury character. Some vanilla and spice on the palate, rich rather than intense, broad rather than long. Not for the long term, I fear.

Aromas of pear, orange oil, white flowers and toasted bread introduce the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and round wine that's open-knit and gourmand. Demonstrative and giving, it's already accessible.

Despite the heat of the vintage and serious ripeness (14.5% alcohol), this is surprisingly elegant and nuanced. There is a pleasant lemony accent to the ripe tropical flavours coloured with hints of cream, butter, and spice. On the palate, the wine dense but not lacking in freshness. Pleasant now, this will age well.

Open and aromatic with honeysuckle flowers, dried apples and mangoes, as well as white peaches and stone. Full-bodied, this grows slowly on the palate with an intense, powerful finish. Lots of cream, cooked apples, lemons and light oak at the very end. Tight and right.
