Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2016
Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2016
Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2016 is the ‘second wine’ of the legendary Tenuta dell'Ornellaia in Bolgheri, but made with the same philosophy and rigour as Ornellaia. The grapes come mainly from the estate's younger vineyards, on slopes facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the result is a Supertuscan red that combines depth, elegance and great potential for ageing. 2016 was an exceptional year: a mild, rainy winter, a regular spring and perfect flowering, followed by a dry summer with some water stress, offset by cool nights.
Vinification: Manual harvest in 15 kg boxes, with double sorting before and after destemming. Each grape variety and plot ferments in stainless steel at 26–30 ºC for two weeks, followed by maceration for 10–15 days. Malolactic fermentation begins in stainless steel and ends in barrels (25% new French oak, 75% 1 year old). The wine is aged for 15 months in a climate-controlled cellar, with the final blend made after 12 months and returned to the barrel for another 3 months, before 6 months in the bottle.
Tasting notes: Deep ruby colour. The nose is captivating, with ripe red fruit, notes of spices and a subtle touch of cocoa and tobacco. On the palate, it is full and enveloping, with very soft tannins, a silky texture and a long finish, combining immediate pleasure with evident ageing potential.
Grape varieties: 44% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot and 12% Cabernet Franc

Dark, elegant ruby red. On the nose, lots of dark berries, ripe cassis, subtle wood spice, medium intensity. Very decisive on the palate, immediately unfolding with balanced fruit and a hint of salt, well-balanced, coating the tongue like a fine cloth, tight tannins, powerful pressure on the palate in the finish.
Appreciate the aromas of crushed stones and currants that follow through to a full body, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Lots of dark-berry and walnut character in the aftertaste. Beautiful second wine of Ornellaia.
Supple and polished, exhibiting plum, black cherry, wild thyme and spice aromas and flavors. Solidly built, yet harmonious and approachable now, with hints of iron and cedar on the lingering finish.
The 2016 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a dark, enveloping wine. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, menthol, licorice and spice infuse this succulent, voluptuous Serre Nuove. The 2016 is a relatively accessible Serre Nuove that will drink well upon release, its considerable richness notwithstanding.
