Quinta do Vale Meão Red 2008

Quinta do Vale Meão Red 2008 is produced in the Upper Douro (Vila Nova de Foz Côa), on an estate created in 1877 by D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira. Since 1998, the Olazabal family has been dedicated to producing and ageing the estate's wines, taking advantage of a rare terroir where schist, granite and alluvial soils coexist side by side. 2008 was a classic and very balanced year in the Douro, with ripe fruit, structure and freshness supporting a long evolution — a red wine made for ageing (and to shine at the table).

Vinification: Selection of grapes from the oldest vines (over 35 years old) and vinification by grape variety/plot. After destemming, part of the fermentation begins in granite lagares with foot treading, followed by vats; fermentation lasts about 8 days. Part of it undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels. Aged for 16–18 months in French oak (50% new and 50% used).

Tasting Notes: Intense and structured, combining ripe black fruit with floral and spicy notes, a mineral background and integrated wood. Firm tannins, lively acidity and a long finish, with the energy and precision that make the wine grow in the glass and in the bottle.

Grape Varieties: Classic house blend: Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca as the backbone, complemented by Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão (among other historic varieties from the estate).

Douro Superior. Deeply coloured with black core. Fruit smells even more savoury than in the 2007, black cherry and sweet damson. Spicy, dark and minerally but with real fruit richness at its heart. Powerful wine that manages to convey elegance and refinement even in youth. Clearly has plenty of oak but it's swallowed up by the fruit and the minerally depths. Chewy, so moreish and the finish amazingly fresh. Hold tight for a long life. Great wine.

Very fresh and pure-tasting, displaying a minerally essence to the concentrated dark plum, cassis and dark cherry flavors that are broad, dense and rich. Medium-grained tannins emerge with plenty of fresh acidity. The balanced finish features mocha and spice, with hints of chocolate. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. Drink now through 2020. 2,500 cases made.

The 2008 TINTO, the winery’s flagship label, is a blend of Touriga Nacional (55%), Touriga Franca (30%), Tinta Roriz (10%) and Tinta Barroca (5%). Ethereal, showing its oak a bit too much in its youth, and reminding me just a little of fine Rioja, this seems otherwise and remarkably graceful early on, a wine that has a Burgundian feel in the mid-palate. It has that stereotypical iron-fist-in-velvet-glove demeanor, too, as it packs quite a powerful punch underneath the initially elegant and oaky demeanor. The oak should integrate with time, but make no mistake about it, there is a lot more here than oak and this wine has a lot of upside; as with a lot of 2008s, it just may not all be apparent early on. Drink 2012-2028.

One of Portugal's great wines, this epitomizes the minerality and the rich, dark fruit of the Douro. It is intensely structured, powered by dark tannins, with rich berry fruit, layers of wood and acidity. With the extra freshness and pure fruits that are typical of 2008, this will age for many years.
