Quinta do Vale Meão Red 2007

Quinta do Vale Meão Red 2007 is produced in the Upper Douro, in the emblematic Meão terroir, where the proximity of the river and the diversity of soils (schist, granite and alluvial) give rise to red wines of great depth and freshness. The estate was founded in 1877 by D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira and, since 1998, the Olazabal family has been producing wines under their own name, preserving the estate's heritage and elevating it to the top of the great Portuguese wines. 2007 is now a highly sought-after vintage: it has a ‘classic’ profile, with ripe fruit and elegance, serious structure and a long finish — ready to drink, but with the capacity to continue to evolve in the cellar.

Vinification: The result of a selection of the best plots (including old vines). The grape varieties are harvested and vinified separately, with destemming, foot treading in granite presses and fermentation in vats for about eight days. Part of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels. It ages for 16 to 18 months in French oak, half in new barrels and half in used ones, to integrate structure and aroma without masking the Douro.

Tasting notes: Ruby colour. Very smooth nose, with sweet cherry and violet. Full and harmonious on the palate, with firm (slightly rustic) tannins and a long, persistent finish.

Grape varieties: Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca (usually the basis of the blend), complemented by Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão.

This powerful red delivers concentrated flavors of dark plum, Asian spice, roasted meats and dark chocolate that are backed up by fine acidity. Medium-grained tannins are silky, and the finish is rich, with concentrated notes of dark chocolate, mocha and cream. Best from 2012 through 2018. 200 cases imported.

Dark ruby garnet, black core, violet reflections. Mineral undertones of blackberries, blueberries, a hint of dried fruit and honey, balsamic notes, delicate truffle. Full-bodied, intense fruit, creamy texture, highly elegant tannins, hints of spice on the finish, ripe cherry fruit and nougat in the aftertaste, sweet extract, lingering aftertaste, guaranteed ageing potential, a great Douro taste experience.

The 2007 TINTO, the winery’s flagship wine, simply made me smile. Bright, elegant and well structured, this has fine balance, but more than anything else—delicious fruit. Sweet and sexy, this still has a firm backbone and it shows better the next day. It leans a little more to Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz this year, the typical Touriga Nacional percentage (50-60%) having declined to less than 40%, according to winemaker Francisco Olazabal. Comparing this to the 2005, Olazabal called the tannins more mature, and the fruit fresher. I agree especially with the first point. This is remarkably graceful and Burgundian in style, more harmonious than the 2005, but not perhaps quite as ageworthy. My one concern is that the wine is a bit too oaky at the moment (it did get 100% new oak), more so than usual at this stage, it seems to me. It certainly needs a couple of years to settle down. Assuming the oak integrates as well as I think it will, this is a big winner and may even deserve an uptick in score. It should age beautifully and make a lot of friends for the Douro. There are a lot of pricey trophies in the Douro these days whose prices are hard to justify in this economy and in this vintage, where a lot of the lesser wines perform particularly well. But for an upper level wine that almost always delivers (the off vintage 2006 being a notable recent exception), this is an excellent value point, relatively speaking. It has maintained a very reasonable price point, cheaper than wines like Pintas, and around half the price of wines like Batuta and Vinha da Ponte. Drink 2011-2024.

Douro Superior. Dark as elderberry juice. Relatively closed on the nose though you can sense the riches lying in wait. Pure dark fruit with the mineral tones of the Douro clearly showing. Savoury too. Even more savoury and coal-like on the palate. Fine but dense tannins and lovely harmony even though it is still young and not fully expressive. Refined and elegant even now. Slides over the palate in that cool, dark Douro fashion. Lovely wine.
