Anselmo Mendes A Torre 2019

Anselmo Mendes A Torre 2019 is the top of the range from the historic Quinta da Torre, in Monção, in the Gadanha river valley. Acquired by Anselmo in 2016, the estate has 50 hectares planted exclusively with Alvarinho, and A Torre is made from a selection of the best grapes from the best plots, showcasing the purest and most sophisticated expression of this grape variety in Monção and Melgaço. In 2019, the microclimate of Monção and Melgaço combined hot days with cold nights, allowing for slow ripening, an excellent balance between fruit and acidity, and moderate alcohol levels, considered exceptional for Alvarinho wines with great ageing potential.

Vinification: Hand-picked in small boxes to preserve freshness. The grapes are gently pressed after destemming and the must ferments in used 400L French oak barrels. This is followed by 9 months of ageing in barrels, on total lees, with bâtonnage, before more than four years of rest in the bottle.

Tasting notes: Intense straw yellow colour with an almost fluorescent brightness. The nose is deep and delicate: citrus (grapefruit, lime), ripe stone fruit, hints of fine herbs, truffle and spices, enveloped in a subtle suggestion of vanilla from the used barrel. On the palate, it is full and very balanced, with a creamy texture, vibrant acidity, strong minerality and a long, salty, elegant and persistently fresh finish - a great Alvarinho for ageing!

The 2019 A Torre is a new Alvarinho, sourced from the Quinta da Torre property. They selected the very best bunches, the ripest from each plant, using the eight different soils/textures they have. It fermented in used 400-liter barrels, where the wine matured with the full lees for nine months. It has a bright almost fluorescent color and complexity, depth, clout, freshness and elegance, with a lot of subtleness and notes of truffle, spices and herbs. The super-balanced palate has citrus freshness, tangerine, herbs and a salty twist. This goes way beyond being a varietal wine—it's elegant, mineral and complex, one of the best Alvarinho/Albariño wines in the world. There is a crystalline purity here that is breathtaking. For Anselmo Mendez, 2019 was an exceptional year, and the wine should be truly long lived. 4,000 bottles were filled in June 2020 and kept for no less than 54 months in bottle before it was released in early 2025.

Dried peaches, honey, white flowers and hints of nectarines and grapefruit zest on the nose. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, incisive and concentrated, with a ripe core that expands gracefully in the finish. Beautifully balanced between richness, fruit and acidity. This comes from a single parcel within a single vineyard in Moncao. Fermented and aged for nine months in used barrels, followed by bottle aging for four years. Drink now.
