Principal Grande Reserva 2013

Principal Grande Reserva 2013 is the flagship red of Colinas de São Lourenço, in S. Lourenço do Bairro, the heart of the Bairrada DOC. Produced on a 61he estate of dryland vineyards planted on gentle hills with clay-limestone soils, this wine was created with the ambition of rivalling any world-class red wine. The Atlantic-influenced climate allowed for slow and complete ripening. The grapes were in good condition, with excellent concentration, balanced acidity and enormous ageing potential.

Vinification: Manual harvest, with selection on a conveyor belt at the entrance to the winery. The grapes are destemmed, crushed and transferred by gravity to temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, where alcoholic and malolactic fermentation takes place. Maceration lasts 20 days, with délestage to extract colour and fine tannins. The wine is aged for 24–30 months in 225L French oak barrels and the final blend is aged 8 years in bottle before being released.

Tasting notes: Opaque centre with a very narrow ruby-coloured halo. On the nose, black fruit, notes of mint and green pepper, enveloped by the fine spices of the wood, in several layers of depth. On the palate, it's full-bodied, voluminous, with fresh acidity and smooth, very polished tannins; the sensations linger on the palate in an elegant and prolonged manner, confirming Bairrada's vocation for great red wines for ageing.

Grape varieties: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Touriga Nacional and 20% Merlot

This is showing lovely berry-fruit character like mulberries and blackcurrants alongside coffee beans, chili-chocolate and wet earth. It’s medium-bodied, supple and well integrated with softened tannins. Cabernet sauvignon, touriga nacional and merlot. Drink now or hold.

Half Cabernet Sauvignon, plus Touriga Nacional and Merlot, aged for around two years in barrels. The spicy notes of Cabernet are more evident than in previous vintages, sweet pepper, ripe fruit and floral, light leather and lots of spice. The palate combines ripe fruit and tannic structure with a sensation of freshness and muscle, tasty and broad, finishing with grip and a hint of liquorice.

Aging gracefully, this expressive red is fresh and harmonious. Notes of bay leaf, cedar and espresso are a fragrant overtone for ripe black currant and black olive flavors enmeshed with fine-grained tannins. This shows good focus and length through to the finish of milled pepper and graphite. Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional and Merlot. Drink now through 2030. 100 cases imported.

A blend of Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from dry-farmed vineyards, the wine is concentrated. It has a dark coffee aroma and intense black fruits that have now softened. It is rich and dense, its acidity and tannins still powerful. Drink the wine now.
