Valtuille Villegas 2023

Valtuille Villegas 2023 is a single-vineyard red wine produced by Bodega Castro Ventosa in the Bierzo region. Coming from very old vines located in the ‘Villegas’ area of Valtuille de Abajo, the wine reflects the minimal intervention philosophy of the Pérez family, led by Raúl Pérez, one of Spain's most influential winemakers. This is a red wine that is a pure expression of the terroir, with limited production and a focus on the elegance, freshness and aromatic complexity that characterise the high-altitude wines of Bierzo.

Vinification: Hand-picked, with careful selection in the vineyard. The grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks or small open vats, with some of the stems left in to give greater structure and freshness. The wine is then aged in used French oak barrels for around 12 months, preserving the purity and expression of the terroir without excessive wood. It is not filtered or clarified before bottling.

Tasting Notes: Fresh, floral and mineral profile, with aromas of wild red fruits, violets and dried herbs, accompanied by earthy nuances and fine spices. On the palate, it is elegant and vibrant, with fine tannins, excellent acidity and a deep, persistent finish marked by salty and mineral notes. A wine of great finesse and character, representative of the refined style of modern Bierzo.

The 2023 Valtuille Villegas comes from a vineyard on sandy soils by Raúl Pérez's house, in a place that tends to produce more elegant wines. It fermented with 35% full clusters with 27 days of maceration in oak vats and matured in 500-liter French oak barrels for 12 months. This was one of the highlights of the vintage, pale, perfumed, ethereal and high-pitched. This is really fine-boned, the most elegant of the 2023s. It has 12.45% alcohol with a higher pH of 3.76 and 5.1 grams of acidity. This is my favorite today. 1,150 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2025.

A wine of great elegance and subtlety, this comes from one of the outstanding parajes in Valtuille. The nose is ethereal – fine and floral, with rose petal, pomegranate and a hint of orange peel. The palate is framed by gentle oak influence from aging in 400L barrels, softening the tannins while still maintaining enough grip to provide impressive scaffolding. The sandy soils of the parcel mark the wine with precision and finesse, and a truly harmonious Mencía. 2025-2033

The 2023 Valtuille Villegas is 100% Mencía from a sandy parcel in Valtuille. The aromas are shy yet enciting, with cherry, peach, violet and lavender. The palate is slender, agile and lightly gripping, offering a clean, energetic profile. At 12.5% alcohol, it delivers elegance and represents one of the most modern, benchmark expressions of Mencía in Bierzo.
