Sassicaia 2015
Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri 2015
The Sassicaia 2015 (Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC) is an absolute icon of the “Super Tuscans” and a wine that changed the history of Bolgheri. It was born from a project started by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta (in the 1940s), inspired by the similarity of the local soils to those of Graves, in Bordeaux. For decades it was a “family” wine, until the 1968 harvest was the first to reach the market (released in 1971).
In 2015, Tenuta San Guido had a very successful year: a generally mild winter with good rainfall, a favorable spring, and a summer that started hot and stabilized with some rain at the end of July; in August, the night/day temperature range helped achieve perfect phenolic ripeness.
Vinification: sorting on a selection table, destemming, and very gentle pressing; fermentation in stainless steel at 30–31 °C, without the addition of external yeasts, with maceration for 12–15 days (Cabernet Franc) and 10–13 days (Cabernet Sauvignon), with pumping over and délestage; malolactic fermentation in stainless steel completed in November.
Ageing: 20–25 months in French oak barrels
Tasting notes: black fruit and Mediterranean herbs, firm structure, fine tannins and a long, salty and elegant finish — a great red wine for decades. It is no coincidence that the winery itself recalls that 2015 was Wine Spectator's “Wine of the Year” (2018).
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Clear, intense ruby red. Very intense and dense nose, full of dark currant, fine mint in the background, plus notes of SAVOURY macchia herbs. Juicy, clear fruit in the approach, opens with lots of fine-meshed tannin, very well integrated, good tension, vivid, clear fruit also in the course, very long finish, very precise, as if chiseled from a block.
This iconic wine's blackberry, cedar and vanilla aromas fill the glass. The elegant, structured palate delivers juicy black currant, black cherry, exotic spice, crushed herb and menthol flavors alongside taut, fine-grained tannins. It boasts a fantastic combination of delicious, ripe fruits, balanced by remarkable freshness and agility for the hot vintage. Drink 2022–2035. Kerin O’Keefe
Love the aromas to this young red with blackcurrants, sage, cinnamon and five-spice character. Changes all the time. Full-bodied, dense and powerful with a ripe and rich tannin backbone that gives form and beauty to the ripe and beautiful fruit. Tight and very long. Approachable now but will reward more in five to six years. A classic Sassicaia.
The 2015 vintage was also a very hot vintage and produced a bolder, riper style of wine which was much loved and appreciated by wine critics and collectors alike, but for Tenuta San Guido themselves it was less typically Sassicaia and a little less elegant and reserved than their preferred style. However, it is a wine with a lot of charm. It is big, bold and full bodied with aromas of toast and cream and plenty of ripe blackberries. This 2015 has a young, forceful personality that’s hard not to like. Full of charm. (SH)
The long-awaited 2015 Bolgheri Sassicaia represents a tremendous effort that comes together with seamless precision and focus. This is a confident and proud red wine from Tuscany. Starting with the primary material at hand, you sense the quality of fruit thanks to the wine's beautifully dark appearance and the rich texture it offers to the palate. The acidity is integrated, but more freshness still would have been welcomed in my view (and would also contribute to its longevity). The bouquet is amplified both in terms of volume and length. Its playlist includes dark berry fruit, spice, leather, licorice and roasted coffee bean. Yet, the mouthfeel is extremely graceful and silky. The wine's undisputed pedigree is showcased on the palate. It should also be noted that this edition of Sassicaia feels more ready and open to me. It will age and evolve beautifully, but the 2015 Sassicaia can also be enjoyed in the medium-term. This wine is all about the here and now. (ML)
Rich and concentrated, this red features black currant, blackberry, violet, mineral and spice flavors. Dense yet lively, structured yet impeccably balanced, with vibrant acidity driving the long, fruit-filled aftertaste. The oak is beautifully integrated. *Collectible, #1 Top 100 Wines of 2018* (BS)
