Penfolds Grange Bin 95 2006
Penfolds Grange Bin 95 2006
Penfolds Grange Bin 95 2006 is one of the absolute icons of Australian wine and the emblem of Penfolds, founded in 1844 in Adelaide. Created by Max Schubert in the 1950s to rival the great Bordeaux wines, Grange has become Australia's “Heritage Icon” and a global benchmark for long-aged Shiraz. The 2006 vintage is considered one of the best in recent decades and is highly coveted by collectors. 2006 was a year of great quality in South Australia, with perfectly ripe fruit and excellent concentration. Penfolds itself describes the wine as the result of a ‘superb vintage’, with powerful structure, enormous ageing potential and a drinking window that extends into the mid-21st century.
Vinification: The wine was aged for 18 months in 100% new American oak barrels, a classic signature of the house, responsible for the deep, spicy profile and enormous structure of fine tannins.
Tasting notes: Deep garnet colour. On the nose, layers of blackberry and black plum, wild blackberry, notes of liquorice, dark chocolate and a hint of herb garden, with touches of soy, black olive and sweet spices. On the palate, dense and concentrated, with very pure black fruit enveloped by rich, fine and persistent tannins, an almost creamy texture and elegant notes of toasted walnut, mocha, vanilla and graphite in the long and firm finish. A cult red, ideal for extended ageing or for great moments at the table.
Grape varieties: 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon

Not quite the massive monster that is the 2004 Grange, the 2006 is still no shrinking violet. It's full bodied, muscular and extracted, and while the flavors veer toward espresso and dark chocolate, there's also a ribbon of raspberry fruit running through the wine from start to long, dusty finish. Drink 2015–2025, and probably beyond.
Made from fruit coming predominantly from the Barossa Valley this year (97%) and containing 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2006 Grange has been added to my list of favorite recent vintages. Deep garnet-purple colored, it’s still a little youthfully mute, offering notes of warm cherries, black currants, anise, coffee and toast with underlying hints of soy, yeast extract, black olives and Indian spices. Tight-knit and solidly structured on the medium to full-bodied palate, the concentrated fruit is densely coiled around the firm grainy tannins and very crisp acidity at this stage, but promises something very special in the years to come. It finishes very long, complex and layered with the cedar poking through the fruit purity. Patience is required for this vintage; it should begin opening out around 2016 and drink to 2030+.
Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections. Black berry jam, some coconut, figs, mocha, fine ethereal balsamic nuances, smoky herbal spice notes, nuances of Valrhona chocolate, underpinned by notes of cinnamon, liquorice and a hint of soy. Complex and full-bodied, ripe fruit, small black berries, present but silky tannins, fine extract sweetness, chocolatey finish, great potential for the future, mineral and persistent. Peter Moser
Bottle 1: Looks older than the 2004 but it’s still vibrant in terms of fruit, even if still a bit chewy.
Bottle 2: Just a little fresher than the first pour but basically the same strong liquorice notes. A tad severe. (Nick Ryan arguing it should be elevated to top division of Grange.)
(98% shiraz and 2% cabernet sauvignon): Deep ruby. Highly aromatic nose offers black raspberry, cherry pit, potpourri and minerals. Dense, lush and sweet but very energetic, offering spicy red and dark berry, dark chocolate, rose pastille and licorice flavors complemented by spicy, sweet oak. Shows bitter chocolate and cherry-cola nuances on the extremely persistent, spice-accented finish. This should be approachable on the young side.
A balanced and intense red, with sliced meat, blackberries and spices. Full body, with silky and refine tannins and hints of new wood. Sweet tobacco and plums. A little shy now. Give it three to four years.
