Gaja Barbaresco DOCG 1971

Gaja Barbaresco DOCG 1971 is a piece of Piedmont history, signed by Angelo Gaja, the producer who modernised Barbaresco and took Nebbiolo to worldwide cult status. Coming from his own vineyards in Barbaresco and Treiso, this wine represents the phase in which Gaja began to reduce yields and introduce French oak, refining the classic style of the house with greater precision and depth. 1971 was an extraordinary year for Barolo and Barbaresco, often cited as one of the great classics of the 20th century. The wines combined concentration, vibrant acidity and enormous ageing potential, as evidenced by this Barbaresco 1971, still full of life decades after the harvest.

Vinification: Fermented in the traditional way, with long macerations to extract colour, fine tannins and complex aromas. At that time, ageing combined large Slavonian oak barrels with the increasing use of French barriques, a departure from regional practice that helped to refine the structure and texture.

Tasting notes: Deep ruby colour with a brick rim. The nose is seductive and mature, with black plum, dried fruit, notes of leather, damp earth, liquorice and a touch of orange peel and spice. On the palate, it is soft and enveloping, with lively acidity, fully polished tannins and an almost creamy texture; the red and black fruit, now in an elegant jammy register, lingers in a very long and harmonious finish.

Grape varieties: 100% Nebbiolo

The 1971 Barbaresco comes as a revelation in terms of its precocity after so many years, partly because it came from a double magnum. Quite deep in colour, it offered seductive aromas of black plums, mulberry, boot polish and just a slither of marmalade. Silky smooth and plush on the palate, there is a melted mouthfeel to this Barbaresco that makes it completely irresistible. On the basis of this, large formats would seem to possess great longevity.

Mid ruby with brickstone rim. Initially a little firmer on the nose than the 1958, but more balsamic too. Succulent and still a little vibrant on the palate with minerally, iron notes. Great length but after a while begins to fade a little in the glass.
