Chateau Leoville Barton 2022

Chateau Leoville Barton 2022 is a red wine that originates from a vineyard located in the heart of the St Julien terroir. On one of the most beautiful gravelly hillsides of the Garonne, facing the Gironde river, the clayey and gravelly subsoil perfectly regulates climatic variations throughout the year. Cultivation is traditional, without thinning or herbicides. The vineyards are mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Vinification: Harvesting is done entirely by hand. After destemming, the berries are carefully selected, trodden and poured by gravity into thermoregulated wooden vats, according to their plots. Alcoholic fermentation lasts 7 to 10 days and extraction is always respectful of the juice, adjusting the number of pump-overs according to the cuvées and harvests. Maceration lasts about 3 weeks, after which the wine is transferred to barrels batch by batch. The wine is then aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new, in a cellar maintained at 15°C.

Tasting Notes: Dense garnet colour. Discreet roasted nose with black fruit and clove aromas. Fresh attack on the palate with notes of eucalyptus. The wine is firm, dense and concentrated, full of vibrancy. The structure of the wine is capable of defying the passing years, making it a wine with great ageing potential.

Grape Varieties: 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11.5% Merlot and 5.5% Cabernet Franc

Shows restraint in this opulent year. Quite complete and refined, and you immediately pick up a bit of sweetness from the fruit of this vintage, but it is not over the top. A lot of finesse and length, with structured, dusty tannins. A no-brainer buy from the vintage. 60% new oak. 83% cabernet sauvignon, 11.5% merlot and 5.5% cabernet franc. Drink from 2027.

Very dark crimson. Wonderfully fragrant with stony/mineral black fruit. Powerful, really intense and surprisingly fresh. A very big, very powerful wine and yet still achieves balance. Thick, deep, firm but smooth tannins.

Barrel sample. This is a beautifully textured wine, with its fruit and tannins in harmony. Its intensity is matched by its balance, giving a ripe, layered and elegant wine with a fine future.

Violet and iris notes hint at its purity, while the cold cast iron– and charcoal-accented structure warns that patience is required. In between is a core that offers sleek refinement, with shimmering cassis, plum and black cherry puree. Tightly drawn through the pinpoint finish, but everything is in proportion. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2030 through 2050. 10,800 cases made.

The 2022 Léoville Barton is performing brilliantly in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, pen ink, cigar box and spices. Medium to full-bodied, suave and velvety, it's dense and concentrated, with terrific energy and persistence. As readers will remember, it's the first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, which more than doubled the number of vats, permitting sub-plot by sub-plot harvesting and vinification, along with a number of other technical improvements that translate into enhanced purity and precision.

Retains signature character and architecture, combined with a come-hither ripeness that is all about the 2022 vintage. A brilliant wine, luscious and supple with cassis and bilberry, damson and black cherry along with cocoa bean and mandarin. Delivers confidence and ageability. The Barton family continue to make this wine unmissable.

Cassis, graphite, smoky tobacco, violets, and a wonderful sense of minerality all emerge from the 2022 Château Léoville Barton, a riveting Saint-Julien that shows the style of this estate while bringing the richness and depth of the vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, it has enough tannins to warrant a decade of cellaring and will have 30+ years of prime drinking. I’d put this up with the finest Léoville Barton I’ve tasted, as well as with the truly greats of the vintage.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Delicate chocolate, underlay of dark wild berries, ripe plums, blackberries and liquorice. Complex, cool, mineral body, integrated firm tannins, cherries on the finish, lingers very long with a salty echo. Shows certain ageing potential; a great future.
