Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz

The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the project internally when development work began in the early 1990s. Stylistically, RWT is contemporary, opulent and finely tuned. An interesting contrast to the well-established Grange. RWT is produced from Shiraz grapes from the Barossa Valley, selected primarily for their aromatic qualities, varietal typicity, fine tannins and soft texture.

Ageing: 14 months in French oak casks (67% new)

Producer's tasting notes: On the Nose French oak is apparent but does not dominate overtly, imparting an exotic spiciness that complements the blue fruits. There is an earthy depth, with ironstone adding to the wine's aromatic profile. The layers continue to develop with espresso and bitter chocolate adding richness, while rhubarb and fermented tea add a unique touch. On the palate White cherry and black cherry lead the way, their fruitiness accompanied by hints of chocolate. The red and blue fruits - blackberries and redcurrants - come to the fore. These are complemented by the sweetness of grape jams and the subtle spiciness of pink peppercorns. The structure displays both tension and potential; it's coiled, hinting at complexity that will reveal itself over time. The young but layered tannins interact with the fine acidity to ensure that each sip is as memorable as the last.

The 2022 RWT Bin 798 is archetypal Barossa Shiraz: it has red earth, ironstone, mulberry, blood plum, sumac spices and dried herbs in profusion. The wine is earthy, tannic and ripe, with a framing of charry oak. I find this to be muscular, dense, intense and super concentrated, and for lovers of the RWT style, this will likely cement itself as one of the greats. It is a massive wine, well-handled and powerful. It matured for 14 months in French oak hogsheads, 67% new. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

This 2022 Shiraz RWT Bin 798 from Barossa Valley has decadent levels of flavors, wound up in a deep pool of muscular tannins that promise a very long life. Bold and expressive, it almost fills the room with tarry, meaty, bloody aromas and a powerful undertow of French oak. A tighter palate follows, with blackberry and blueberry flavors building slowly through a rich, full-flavored finish. Far from ready to drink now, but will reward the (very) patient.

Fascinating, subtle aromas of blackberry, cloves and white pepper with some cedar. Medium-bodied with dark fruit and creamy tannins that are integrated and polished. Fine and focused finish. Very drinkable now, but will age nicely. (07/2024)

Very dark blackish crimson. Aromatic start and then a little pinched and drying on the finish. I know it’s meant to be opulent but I’m not sure it is in this case. Definitely needs time. But the very lively fruit on the end suggests there’s a fine future eventually in view. Relatively refined Barossa Shiraz. (JR)
